The growth of hellenicare depends upon the guidance of responsible stewards in setting policies that will insure financial stability and positive program development. We are fortunate to have Board Members whose humanitarian and moral values call them to service. It is our pleasure to introduce the 2009 Board of Directors.
Andrew A. Athens, President and Founder
United State Senator Barbara Mukulski was right when she said that Andrew A. Athens was a “one-man foreign aid program” as he has dedicated his life to helping others. His parents set the example of charity for him during the Great Depression. His mother would say there is always room for one more at the dinner table. This kindness toward others would be repeated many times over throughout his life.
Upon witnessing the devastation and poverty that many Hellenes and their neighbors were living in after the fall of the Soviet Union during his tenure as President of the World Council of Hellenes (1995-2006), Andrew Athens knew that the global Hellenic community needed to respond to the plight of poor Hellenes in the Diaspora. In 1997, initially launched as the Primary Health Care Initiative (PHCI), he founded hellenicare as a medical relief and humanitarian non-governmental organization.
As President of the Board of Directors, he works diligently to promote the organization, oversee its operations and raise funds. His leadership has seen the development of medical centers, mobile unit programs, nurses’ stations and the delivery humanitarian assistance totaling $136 million in 11 years. Andrew Athens remains committed to helping vulnerable Hellenes and their neighbors across the globe.
